Nine Border Amateur Football Association sides through to second round of South of Scotland Amateur Cup

Among the teams taking that less labour-intensive route to the second round are Hawick Waverley, having been awarded automatic progress as their prospective opponents on Saturday gone, Selkirk Victoria, currently bottom of the association’s B division, were unable to muster a team.

Gala Fairydean Rovers Amateurs and Leithen Rovers were also awarded first-round home wins, versus Lesmahagow and Danderhall Miners respectively.

The six sides that got through the harder way at the weekend are Hawick Legion, Kelso Thistle, Langlee Amateurs, Lauder, Duns Amateurs and Eyemouth United Amateurs.

Hawick Legion beat Jed Legion 12-1 at home at Brunton Park, their scorers, assisted by an own goal, being debutant Joe Wylie with four, Euan Gray with three, Gary Moffat, Oliver Stewart, Jayden Romeo and Ben Murdoch.

Kelso’s scorers during a 5-2 win at Hawick’s Wilton Lodge Park were Alex Gibbs with a hat-trick, Shane Bonnington and Luke McKinlay, with Nathan Gillie on target for their hosts at the double.

Three goals from 70th-minute substitute Des Sutherland and other efforts from Jack Hay and Lewis Swaney earned Langlee a 5-2 win against Newtown at Kelso High School’s 3G pitches, with Calum Mcgowan and Joe Tait on the scoresheet for their opponents.

On target for Duns away to neighbours Chirnside United at Comrades Park were Gregor Watson, Josh Hebdon, Alan Jess and Liam Demarco.

James Paxton put away both of Eyemouth’s goals in a 2-0 win against Gala Hotspur at Galashiels Public Park.

Three other association sides were knocked out – Ancrum, losers by 2-0 at Carluke Thistle; Langholm Legion, given a 9-2 thumping away to another South Lanarkshire side, Kirkfield United; and Berwick’s Highfields United, beaten 5-4 at home in a penalty shootout by North Berwick after tying 3-3.

Langholm’s scorers at Lanark Racecourse were Brian Mattinson and Alistair Little, with Jamie Henderson five times over, Kenzi McCulloch and Dylan Burnside netting for their hosts.

Highfields’ scorers were Lee Dodd twice and Niall Jones.

Three first-round ties were postponed and will be played this coming Saturday, all with 2pm kick-offs. They see Tweeddale Rovers hosting Biggar United, Greenlaw away to Tweedmouth Amateurs and Earlston Rhymers on the road at Dunbar’s West Barns Star.

The second round of the Scottish Amateur Football Association competition, to be played on a date yet to be fixed, will see Tweedmouth or Greenlaw hosting Lauder, Hawick Legion hosting Kelso, Langlee on home turf versus Carluke, Leithen Rovers hosting West Barns Star or Earlston Rhymers, Fairydean’s ammies at home to Lanark’s Kirkfield United, Eyemouth hosting either Tweeddale Rovers or Biggar and Duns away to Hawick Waverley.
